The Tour de l’Avenir, which has been contested by national teams since 2007, will now also be open to development teams. A-VELO, the event’s organiser, has officially asked the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) to register the event in class 2.2U on the international Espoirs calendar, starting with the 2026 edition, which will take place from 19 to 27 August.
Adapting to its environment
These changes to the rules governing participation in the Tour de l’Avenir are fully in line with the reality of today’s high-level cycling which, following the reform of professional cycling initiated by the UCI, has seen the professional teams gradually invest in welcoming and training (very) young riders by creating development teams, veritable incubators for the UCI WorldTour ecosystem.
In this way, the Tour de l’Avenir confirms its role as a showcase for talent, wherever it comes from, whether it’s within a national team or a professional team.
With 10 UCI Development Teams at the start
Teams Bahrain Victorious Development Team, Development Team Picnic PostNL, EF Education Aevolo, Ineos Grenadiers Racing Academy, Lidl-Trek Future Racing, Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe Rookies, Soudal Quick-Step Devo Team, Tudor Pro Cycling Team U23, Visma Lease a Bike Development Team, UAE Team Emirates Gen-Z have already confirmed their participation in the event.
The route for the 2026 edition will be unveiled in following monthes as well as the list of national teams participating in the event.
The Tour de l’Avenir is organised by A-VELO with the support of the Tour de France.
