Swiss Descendant
24 August 2018

The second of the four Savoyard stages of the Tour de l’Avenir has not clarified the final suspense to come. Slovenian Tadej Pogaçar, 19, retains the Yellow Jersey conquered Thursday in Meribel and the American Brandon McNulty, 2nd overall, remains in touch, still at seven seconds. Scarcely has the Colombian Ivan Sosa once again scored a slight superiority by taking the second place of this 8th stage at Crest-Voland, without widening the gap on his direct opponents, which leaves him still in 11th position, at 1’7 ” from the Slovenian leader.

If the status quo was pronounced at the favorites at the end of the final ramp which was two kilometers, the Swiss Gino Mäder has not failed to sign a great success stage, which adds to those obtained on the Ronde de l’Isard and the Tour d’Alsace, which already looks like a confirmation, and demonstrates in any case a strong ability to convert the opportunities it creates. The Swiss, 21, forged his success by isolating himself in the descent of the Col des Saisies, about fifteen kilometers from the goal, and resisting in the last two kilometers of climb to the group of favorites set by Ivan Sosa, and in which the young French Clément Champoussin, 6th of the stage, consolidates his aspiration to the “top 10”.

The winner of the day, Gino Mäder, is positioned at the same time in the overall classification (4th). For his part, Ivan Sosa is wearing the jersey of best climber, perhaps waiting better… The Colombian climber hopes that the last two stages will allow him to change the situation to the point of turning it in his favor. There is enough to do this Saturday with the rise of Les Arcs soon given the departure of Séez and the arrival in Val d’Isère after 11.4 km of a gentle climb. And especially the final stage, Sunday, for the conclusion to Saint-Colomban-des-Villards, the very flank of the Glandon pass. Nothing is played.

The yellow jersey passes the line after a day without problems
