Spanish cycling has undoubtedly found its new gem. At just 21 years old, Iván ROMEO made a big statement on Tuesday during the Critérium du Dauphiné. The Movistar rider claimed a solo victory on the third stage, between Celles-sur-Durolle and Les Estables (207 km), after a sharp attack nine kilometers from the finish. A bold and brilliant win that also earned him the yellow leader’s jersey.
For those who follow youth cycling, the name ROMEO comes as no surprise. In August 2023, he had already raised his arms in victory on the Tour de l’Avenir, during the 5th stage between La Tour-de-Salvagny and Lake Aiguebelette. That day, the Spaniard broke away from the front group to claim an authoritative win. A show of strength that hinted at the level he is reaching today.
Since that notable performance, the Valladolid native has continued his rise with metronomic consistency. U23 world time trial champion in 2024 in Zurich, U23 European road race runner-up in 2023, ROMEO has continually lived up to the expectations surrounding him. His arrival in the WorldTour with Movistar now seems fully settled, and his versatility – a powerful time-trialist and a strong climber – makes him a complete rider, capable of excelling in stage races.
On Tuesday, in the Massif Central, it was as much his tactical sense as his current form that made the difference. As the day’s breakaway lacked cohesion, ROMEO sensed the right moment. A clean, precise, flawless attack. Behind him, no one could catch up.
“This is the most beautiful victory of my young career,” he said at the finish. “I had this stage in mind for several weeks. The team gave me carte blanche, and I seized my chance.” Clear-headed and already very mature in his words, ROMEO also impresses with his composure.
His performance is no small feat: winning a stage at the Dauphiné and taking the yellow jersey means reaching the level of the world’s best. And it also validates the Tour de l’Avenir’s reputation as a springboard to the elite. The race, nicknamed the “Tour de France for young riders,” continues to unveil the great champions of tomorrow. After POGACAR, BERNAL, and DEL TORO, it is now Iván ROMEO’s turn to write his upward trajectory.
Still far from reaching his ceiling, the Spanish rider seems destined for a major role in the coming years. In the meantime, his standout performance at the Dauphiné confirms one thing: for him, the future has already begun.
